Impresario poster/BrevoortDeborah Brevoort (Faculty MFAW-VT) was commissioned to write new libretto for Mozart’s comic masterpiece THE IMPRESARIO for the Anchorage Opera in Anchorage, Alaska, where it opens on February 20.

Deborah’s adaptation places Mozart himself at the center of the story as he struggles to bring a new opera to the stage. Pitted between two dueling divas who demand bigger and better parts, and his business manager Buff, who demands rewrites of the music in order to increase tickets sales, Mozart as a young composer struggles to reconcile the demands of commerce with the demands of art. THE IMPRESARIO will run in a double bill with MOZART & SALIERI at the Anchorage Opera through March 1, 2015.

This is the second time Brevoort has been commissioned to create a new libretto for the Anchorage Opera; last season she wrote the critically acclaimed THE POLAR BAT, a contemporary adaptation of DIE FLEDERMAUS, set in the world of Alaskan Reality TV.   Deborah has penned two original operas as well: EMBEDDED, with composer Patrick Soluri, inspired by Edgar Allan Poe stories, which won the the Frontiers Competition at Ft. Worth Opera and premiered at the Fargo Moorhead Opera in 2014; and STEAL A PENCIL FOR ME, a Holocaust love story based on the book of the same title, with composer Gerald Cohen.

Deborah will spearhead Goddard’s new libretto writing concentration in the MFAW program along with faculty members Kenny Fries, Darrah Cloud and Beax Gates.
